Why Adopt a Stray?

Imagine you are on the streets, starving, no one even looking at you, and sometimes even throwing rocks at you, when all you want is to be loved.  Painful pangs in your stomach distract you from being yourself. You can feel fleas crawling across your skin and fur. You are at rock bottom. Then somebody finally notices you. They take you somewhere, and you come out feeling so much better. Than you meet a kind family, who loves you and pampers you. You have found your forever family.

Help save dogs in need

“The greatest happiness you can have is knowing that you saved a dog’s life and gave them a second chance.”

Give these pups a loving forever home

This is the story of most dogs we rescue, or what their future holds. These

dogs are always incredibly grateful and thankful for you rescuing them. It completely changes the course of their life. They give you lots of love and

are very loyal and loving. If you have never adopted a stray, you have never felt the unconditional love and overwhelming gratitude of a dogs whose life you saved.

"When you open up your heart to a stray, you unlock a world of loyalty, joy, and love you never knew existed."

Assuming a mother dog lives to 10 years old, starts breeding at one year, and has two litters of 5 puppies per year that dog alone can produce 90 puppies in her lifetime. If 50% of her litter survives, and 50% are girls, those female dogs get stuck in the same cycle. When you adopt a stray, you are helping to break the cycle of dog homelessness, and you are giving a dog who has hit rock bottom, through no fault of its own, a second chance. In Puerto Rico alone, despite it being a US territory, there are an estimated 500,000 to 650,000 stray dogs.

What Risks Are There for a Street Dog?

One disease is heartworm which infects the heart of many street dogs. The worms get into the heart and heart vessels of a dog and causes them to be short of breath. It also can cause the dog to be short of breath. 30% - 80% of dogs in developing countries and territories have heartworm.

Homeless street dogs are destined to a life of malnutrition due to intestinal worms

Intestinal worms are another pariste that dogs can be infected with. Dogs are almost guaranteed to get worms, as they can contracte it from their mother's placenta and milk. Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms are the type of worms dogs can get. They take the nutrients from the food the dogs get and take it for themselves, which leaves the dogs starving. Sadly it is a cheap easy pill which can resolve the issue, but once they go back onto the streets, they just recontract it.

Most stray dogs have worms
Deworming is cheap and simple

“Before you get a dog, you can’t quite imagine what living with one might be like; afterward, you can’t imagine living any other way.”

Also, more than 40% of street dogs in Puerto Rico are starving, from lack of food, worms or both.

20% of dogs are likely to be hurt or killed in a car accident. By getting them off the street and into loving homes, this

significantly lowers the risk.

In addition to this, there is a 100% chance of the dog living a life of loneliness on the streets by themselves.

When you save a stray dog, you help to lower the risk of many of these things, another reason why your dog would be forever grateful to you for saving it. You also save puppies destined for a life of death and disease.

Rock Bottom Rescue empowers teens and tween over the age of 10, to foster and volunteer to help dogs (with their parents consent). Kids can do a lot more than they are given credit for, if given the chance.
